According to authorities, the 18-year-old suspect and another man walked up to the 65-year-old victim at the driveway of the victim’s home. The house is located in the Rosemont Park neighborhood of Delray Beach, just south of Atlantic Avenue.
A short time after the suspects approached the victim, the shooting occurred. Neighbors reportedly heard the gunfire.
According to witnesses at the scene, two masked men ran away on Southwest Sixth Avenue immediately after gunshots were fired.
It is believed that the shooting might have been the result of a botched robbery attempt. It is not clear if the suspects took anything from the victim.
Delray Beach police eventually identified the suspect and placed him under arrest. The suspect was then charged with first degree murder.
The suspect’s public defender recently appeared at a court hearing on behalf of the suspect and argued that the teenager was not the person who fired the gun.
The suspect is currently being held at the Palm Beach County Jail. No bail has been set in the case.
The Delray Beach Police Department is still actively investigating the fatal shooting.
The killing is at least the eighth murder in Palm Beach County FL so far this year. There were a total of seven homicides in Delray Beach during all of 2014.
