Wellington Florida Teen Dies in Possible DWI Accident
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible DWI accident that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old girl near Wellington, Florida.
The victim, who lived in Wellington, was killed in a fatal wreck that occurred at the intersection of Military Trail and Gun Club Road, just west of the city limits and one block southwest of Palm Beach International Airport.
According to law enforcement, the victim was riding as a passenger on a Hondo Rukus motorcycle. The motorcycle traveled eastbound on Gun Club Road and allegedly ignored a stop light at the intersection.
A 2002 Ford Expedition and a 1998 Toyota Ford 4Runner entered the intersection and crashed into the motorcycle. The three-vehicle crash caused the victim to be thrown from the motorcycle and onto the pavement. Authorities indicated that the victim was not wearing a helmet. The 22-year-old driver of the motorcycle was also thrown from the bike. He sustained serious injuries as a result the accident.
Thankfully, none of the drivers and passengers in the other vehicles suffered injuries in the collision.
Police believe that the driver might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
After the accident, the victim was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL. Doctors pronounced her dead a short time later. The driver was also taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he received medical treatment for his injuries.
According to Palm Beach police, the driver of the motorcycle has been arrested twice since November 2014. He allegedly stole a car in February 2015 and then resisted arrest when police tried to apprehend him. He faced drug charges after police allegedly found him in possession of marijuana.
However, all of the charges stemming from that incident were thrown out when the case was dismissed in March.
