Riviera Beach Man Charged with Arson, Accused of Setting Fire to Car in West Palm Beach, Florida

West Palm Beach Arson SuspectWest Palm Beach police arrested a Riviera Beach FL man who allegedly set fire to his mother’s car.

According to law enforcement, the 44-year-old suspect started the vehicle fire outside a residence located on the 1000 block of 22nd Street in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The suspect’s son actually called local police after he reportedly witnessed the destruction and saw flames coming from the backseat of the car.

It is still unclear why the suspect would have set fire to the vehicle.

Police investigated the scene and allegedly found pieces of a burnt magazine inside the car. As a result of the investigation, police ruled out an accidental fire and began to focus on the suspect.

A short time after the incident occurred in August 2014, police were ready to serve an arrest warrant on the suspect. However, police did not arrest the suspect because he reportedly fled Florida.

The suspect was finally arrested this month by Palm Beach County Sheriff’s officers.

The suspect has been charged with arson. If he is convicted on the arson charges, he is subject to significant criminal penalties. That’s because Florida Statutes Section 806.13 classifies arson as a third degree felony if it results in property damage of more than $1,000. A conviction for third degree arson could result in a maximum penalty of 5 years in Florida State Prison.

Additionally, the suspect might face enhanced penalties because he reportedly has a checkered criminal history. According to authorities, the suspect previously served more than 1 year in prison for drug distribution.

After being arrested and charged with arson in the most recent case, the suspect was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail. He is being held at the facility in lieu of $20,000 bail.
