The young victim was shot while walking near the 2900 block of Avenue F in Riviera Beach, FL. The victim was near the corner of West 29th Street, approximately one-half mile east of City Hall, when gunshots were fired.
The victim was conscious after the shooting. Emergency responders quickly transported him to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to authorities, the victim remains in critical condition.
It is not believed that the victim was targeted in the shooting. A police spokeswoman said that the victim is a good kid who has never been in any kind of trouble. The boy is a student at Lincoln Elementary School in the Palm Beach County School District.
The Riviera Beach Police Department is investigating the shooting and looking for suspects. At this time, investigators have not received many tips in the case.
If a suspect is eventually identified and located, they would be subject to serious criminal charges for aggravated assault, as well as possible weapons offenses. Florida Statutes Section 784.021 classifies aggravated assault with a firearm or other deadly weapon as a third degree felony. A conviction would result in a mandatory minimum sentence of 3 years in state prison.
